History

The roots of  marine surveying in the Caribbean can be traced through Hirst Marine Surveyors.  As one of the  founding members of the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS), Bill Hirst was key not only in the founding of the company, but also in the establishment of marine surveying services in the British Virgin Islands and throughout the Caribbean.

Originally from the UK, Bill Hirst was managing a boat manufacturing facility in Toronto in the late 1960’s and decided he was tired of the cold winters. He built a boat in his spare time and together with his good friend George they set off for the Caribbean.  Bill was soon joined by his architect wife Sarah and after several years of adventures sailing around the Caribbean they settled in the BVI in 1970.

Soon afterwards Bill and Sarah started and successfully operated one of the first yacht charter companies (BVI Bareboats Ltd) in the BVI, a company that continues to this day under a new name and owner. However as the BVI established itself as one of the sailing capitals of the world and Bill becoming more and more involved in marine services the couple decided to sell BVI Bareboats so that Bill could focus full time on his growing marine surveying business (Robert W. Hirst & Co. Ltd) and Sarah returned to architecture.

After several years of apprenticeship, Michael Hirst followed in his father’s footsteps, became an accredited marine surveyor and joined the company in 1994.   The two continued to develop the business and expand the range of services offered and upon Bill’s retirement in 2005, Michael took over as managing director.  The company continues to grow with a team of 4 professionals and now operates under the name of Hirst Marine Surveyors.
